Prior to 1946, a single engine plane crashed into the Empire State Building on 34th Street in New York City killing the pilot. That famous street was usually crowded with tourists and workers as well as automobiles. To my knowledge, no one else was injured. The Empire State Building which was the tallest building in the world at that time did not appear to sustain very serious damage.
However, I was less than age 16, working part time in a Fanny Farmer candy store after school. I did not learn the details. I remember my age since I was working in a store because the archaic New York State laws prohibited children under age 16 working in an office but did permit them to work in a store which, incidentally, was some of te hardest work I ever performed and for which I was paid twenty-five cents an hour with no benefits.
